Over 36 years ago, Eleanor Fletcher founded Loggerhead Marinelife Center, which is now a non-profit organization focused on sea turtle and ocean conservation. Eleanor was one of the first people and women to receive a permit to research sea turtles, causing LMC to have access to one of the most extensive sea turtle nesting databases. Since LMC was founded by a female leader, the Center honors Eleanor's legacy by placing an emphasis on women in STEM and women's leadership. Currently, Lynne Wells serves as the Center's first female Board Chairman. The Center focuses on four core areas of education, conservation, research and rehabilitation. Each year the Center treats an average of 100 sea turtle patients and 1,000 sea turtle hatchlings.
